English tenor John Graham-Hall made his Royal Opera debut in 1989 as Albert Herring. He has since returned to The Royal Opera to sing Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro) and Prince Shuisky (Boris Godunov). He returns in the 2017/18 Season to sing Prisoner/Kedril (From the House of the Dead).

Graham-Hall studied at King’s College, Cambridge, and the Royal College of Music. He has sung for all the major British companies, including regular appearances for Glyndebourne Festival and English National Opera, and internationally for companies including Opera Vlaanderen, Dutch National Opera, Opéra-Bastille, Opéra de Lyon, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Opéra national du Rhin, La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Teatro Real Madrid, Stuttgart Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels, and for the Bregenz, Salzburg and Ravenna festivals. His repertory includes Tichon Kabanov (Kát’a Kabanová), Schoolmaster (The Cunning Little Vixen), Živný (Osud), Aron (Moses und Aron), Edrisi (Król Roger), Don Jerome (Betrothal in a Monastery), and Beadle Bamford (Sweeney Todd). A renowned interpreter of Britten, his Britten roles include Bob Boles and Peter Grimes (Peter Grimes), Mr Upfold (Albert Herring) and Aschenbach (Death in Venice). In 2012 he won the Abbiati prize for his interpretation of Aschenbach.

Graham-Hall has also sung many contemporary roles, including Fool (Birtwistle’s Gawain), Kurt Schwitters (Nyman’s Man and Boy: Dada, world premiere), Kaufmann (Rihm’s Jakob Lenz), Abrenuncio (Eötvös’s Love and Other Demons) and James Nolan (Adams’s Doctor Atomic). His wide concert repertory includes Handel and Henze. In 2013 he published his first novel, My Wife the Diva.
